How Long?

How long does the conveyancing process take?

The average sale or purchase should take 4 to 6 weeks, but this can vary depending on a number of other factors.

The conveyance of leasehold property can takes longer than a freehold property because it's necessary to obtain additional information from the managing agent or owners of the property - especially if they're not UK resident.

To be on the safe side - allow up to 12 weeks for the process to complete, longer if complicated chains are involved.

How you can help speed up the conveyancing process

Although many factors will be out of your control, you could consider the following:

  1. Inform your estate agent that you have appointed somebody to act for you as soon as possible and pass the agent those contact details.
  2. Get confirmation that the other party has instructed a solicitor through your estate agent.
  3. Pay over any search fees and similar monies requested by the conveyancer as soon as you can.
  4. Provide your mortgage account number to the conveyancer as soon as you can.
  5. Return any acceptance forms or similar to your lender as soon as possible.
  6. Inform all parties if you are think that you may be difficult to contact at any time during the completion stages (holiday etc).
